Commercial Generator vs. Home Generator

Apples and OrangesWhat's the difference between a home generator and  commercial generators? Not all generators are equal They come in two configurations a portable generator and a standby generator.

Home Generators

Home generators can be portable or fixed standby generators.  These generators cannot cope with heavy demand and therefore unsuitable for commercial use.

A standby home generator can be anything from 7kW to hundreds of kW. They are very similar to a commercial generators but usually 'single phase' which means the generator can only cope with normal domestic demand.

Commercial Generators

Commercial generators are designed to keep your business running during an outage and run indefinitely until the power returns. Commercial generators are fitted with an automatic mains failure, and come on in an instant the main power fails, and turn themselves off the moment main power returns. This ensures your business can still operate as if a power outage hadn't occurred. Your computers will stay running along with the lighting, fridges and machinery etc. Also at night it will ensure your alarms systems and security lights still operate, reducing the risk of a break in during an outage. Most importantly it means your business doesn't have to cease trading because of an unexpected outage, or do you the risk of upsetting or losing clients over failed orders.

Commercial generators v Home Standby Generators

Commercial generators are similar appliances to the home standby generator and installed permanently somewhere outside. The major difference is they are 'three phase' to support a much larger electrical demand. Most commercial generators are fitted with an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). AVR gives a constantly controlled voltage which gives stability, reducing power dips and surges. This is particularly useful for those businesses which use delicate electronics such as in a hospital or doctor's surgery.

Three phase systems can cope with heavy plant machinery or elevators. Commercial grade generators can be custom built based to your company's specific needs and are super silent and extremely reliable. They also require a minimum of maintenance, just an annual service is required Commercial generators are usually diesel or propane/natural gas.
